More Home Improvements

I feel like this is cheating a bit since this actually occurred on Sunday. But after I got the ceiling lamp installed, Ginger had more items on her list of things I need to do around the house. The next thing on the list was installing curtain rods in the bedroom. This job took a lot longer than the lamp. None of it was difficult, just time consuming in making sure everything is level and correct. The pictures below show our new curtains hanging precariously on the newly installed rods. Ginger made the sheer curtain herself, the solid curtain was apparently purchased.

On to today. Catherine was still napping when I got home tonight. In fact, she was asleep until almost 7:30. The plan for tomorrow keeps changing. She has ballet tomorrow, then after that her and Quinn were going to switch and she was going to go to Richmond for a couple of days and Quinn was going to be coming home. Tonight though she seems to have changed her mind about going. So we'll see whether the kids are swapped tomorrow or whether Ginger just ends up bringing back Quinn.

Speaking of Quinn, we've gotten some photos of just what he's been up to down in Richmond. The pictures don't really contain anything surprising. Seems he's been playing with new freight cars for the train and playing with some new NASCARs that he's acquired while down there. Part of me thinks the reason he always wants to go to Grammy's in Richmond is he always makes out like a bandit getting new toys whenever he's there.

I have no idea what that thing in the last picture is. It's looks like a tie-in toy from the Pixar Cars movie. Wonder if that's coming back with him or staying there.

Imitation Is Flattery

John posted a pic a while back that I really liked (the first one with what looks to be blue string). After I repeatedly asked him how he did it and he didn't respond, I took like 30 seconds and figured it out on my own and came up with this.

The Colbert Report

Are you watching The Colbert Report? If not, you really should check it out. It's on Comedy Central Monday through Thursdays at 11:30 PM (and then repeated who knows how often over the course of the next 24 hours after it airs). He's had some fantastic interviews with Representatives in the past couple of weeks. Ginger doesn't like the show at all, and she laughed several times at the interview with Eleanor Holmes Norton, the representative from the District of Columbia (make with the clicky before YouTube has to remove it due to copyright issues). It's probably one his best interviews. Some of the stuff in the lead up piece won't make sense if you don't watch the show regularly (Stephen hates bears and considers them Godless Killing Machines). But it starts to get really good when the interview actually starts at two minutes into the stream.

If that interview above isn't enough to convince you this show is something to watch, then check out this interview with Representative Robert Wexler from Florida who is apparently running unopposed in the upcoming election. And then there's the follow up to that interview where he blasts the morning news shows.

In the interest of presenting all sides, if you want to see the official sites for the aforementioned representatives, Eleanor Holmes Norton and Robert Wexler both have a presence on the web.

Let There Be Light

So after church I worked on the ceiling lamp in the library. To quickly recap yesterday's findings, there are three wires: red, black and white. It's obviously been wired for a ceiling fan. After my testing yesterday I found that current was on the combination of white and red wires and the combination of black and white wires. I also determined that I could control the current by using the light switch (and right there is the rub, but more on that later).

The amount of time it took to fix the light was about 20 minutes. The amount of time I spent arguing with Ginger before fixing the light was about an hour. See, we were never able to determine which switch at the electrical box turned off power to the library. And after resetting almost all the clocks in the house multiple times, I decided we didn't need to turn the power off there. After all, it was already off because of the light switch. Ginger went on and on about how dangerous what I planned to do was and I was going on and on about how I was being very careful and I kept harping on the whole "there's no power with the light switch turned off". So eventually we talked to her Dad, who agreed with me (yay) and I went ahead and finished putting up the lamp and used the comment to yesterday's post from Kenny about using the white and black and just terminating the red wire. All well and good.

So once I got everything connected I went and got a light bulb and screwed it in and it came on immediately. This was a bit of shock to me (not a physical shock), because the light switch was still in the off position. So I toggled the light switch, and the light stayed on. So I toggled all the light switches in the room and the light stayed on. I toggled all the switches in the adjacent rooms and still the light stayed on. So apparently I had indeed been working with live wires and I owe Ginger an apology because she was in fact completely right that I should have turned off power at the fuse box. *

As I took everything back apart, I retested the connections. And yep, the white / black combination was always showing current independent of the light switch. However, the red / white combination was controlled by the light switch. Apparently yesterday when I was doing my testing with the light switch I tested the red / white combination, saw it wasn't on when the light switch was off and just assumed that the same would be true for the black / white combination. I guess the black / white is supposed to be used for the fan part of a ceiling fan so that you could turn it on and off via the pull cord or something independent of the lights and the white / red combination was for the lights which was controlled by the switch.

So I reversed stuff and terminated the black wire and used the red / white combination and lo and behold we now have a ceiling lamp in the library that actually works. We removed the covering from the light switch too in case people are wondering, and the color of the wires coming off of there are all white and black (so even had I done that beforehand I would have made the wrong choice about the wires since I hadn't fully tested the combinations properly). I can only assume that someone must have crossed the colors of the wires as they go to the ceiling (I believe Ray once said crossing the streams was bad).

* Ginger, I was wrong and I'm sorry. **

** Actually, I blame Kenny for his comment stating the wrong combination of wires. Had he mentioned the correct wires to use, I would have never even known there was a constant live wire (not sure if that's good or bad though).

Yet Another Day At The Pool

Trouble Times Three

Great, another pool pictures post. Good thing that's not getting old. There is some stuff after the pools pictures that I could use help on, so skip to that if you're not interested in the pool pictures. Today Catherine decided she wanted some company at the pool since we're Quinn is still in Richmond. So we invited Rob, Gretchen, Autumn and Tyler to join us as well as Karen and Amanda.

Rob gets bonus points for making me, the original poster boy for pasty white guy, look tan in comparison. Nothing like having another software engineer around to make it all look relative. I didn't take a lot of photos (I think it was under 100 for the day), but I lent Rob the camera for a while so he could play with it. The poor guy is still using a Cannon Powershot G2. I had one of those before I got the D70 and I just couldn't stand the 800+ millisecond delay between pressing the button and having it take a picture. It took nice shots, but that delay made me miss so many shots it just drove me nuts.

I Think The Subject Is Out Of Focus (*cough*)

In The Deep End

I Need More Cake Ingredients

It's All About Accessorizing

Mmmm... Pizza

Tyler was a bit intimidated by the bigger pool and hung out in the kiddie pool most of the time. Autumn was also a little intimidated by the bigger pool initially, but eventually all the girls were having lots of fun over in the big pool. For lunch we ordered Papa Johns pizza and had it delivered to the pool. The sun was apparently very strong today as both Catherine and Ginger ended up getting burned. I personally feel really warm, but don't think I burned (at least I hope I didn't). I'm hoping everyone else escaped getting burned also.

Mom! She's Giving Me "The Look"

After everyone left, we came home and cleaned up. Ginger and Catherine took a nap. I watched a couple of episodes of 24 (Season 3). At this point I'm wondering just how many really bad days can this Jack Bauer guy have. Once I had fulfilled my veg quotient for the day I started in on my Honeydew list from Ginger. One of which is to install a new lamp in the ceiling of the library. Once I got the cover off though, I found several wires, none of which I was able to find current on with my nifty current detector. There are 3 wires in addition to an obvious metal ground. The wires are red, black and white. But I think the reason I couldn't find the current was the wires were completely covered and had been painted at the ends.

So after Ginger and Catherine got up, we headed over to Home Depot to buy a wire cutter / stripper. And then while we were out I stopped by CompUSA and bought a new 250 Gig hard drive. At this point we're on a roll doing errands, so we all went to the mall to look at a Chase something or other (some lounge chair looking thing) that Ginger might like to buy. Then we had dinner at the mall since we were already there (Arby's). And on the way home as we were walking through Jacque Pené I found a ton of shirts (okay, okay, more like 12) on a really good sale. It rang up around $120 dollars, then the cashier said there was a sale coupon in that day's paper for $10 off if you bought $50 (which I must say it's really nice that they don't actually require you to have the coupon and just give it to you). Bonus. At this point though I'm thinking, you know, had I known that I could have divided up my stuff into two purchases of $60 each and gotten $10 off of two purchases instead of $10 off just the one purchase (yes, that's what I do, I look for ways to work the system).

Eventually we came home and put Catherine to bed (after slathering her and Ginger with some aloe). From there I started in on the ceiling lamp again. So after exposing some of each wire with my new stripper, I was able to find current (I had the light turned off while I was stripping it obviously). But I only saw trace of the current when I touched the Black and White or the Red and White wires. The Red and Black wires together didn't register anything. So my question to all those electrically inclined folks out there is if I'm not putting in a ceiling fan and just using a regular lamp, which wires get combined? Do I twist tie together the red and black? Or something else. Seems like the white wire was the constant in the equation for power passing through it so that's why I'm guessing I should be combining the red and black. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Anyway, if there's no update tomorrow, it's probably because I picked the wrong wires and I'm in the hospital.

Man Down! I Mean, Boy Gone!

Grammy left today. For some crazy reason we let Quinn return to Richmond with her for a couple of days. I debated long and hard about that decision. See, I only get to see the kids on the weekends, and last weekend my Mom was up, so I really didn't get to see him (since he always wants to do stuff with her, I'm old news when relatives are in town). So this will be two weekends in a row that I haven't been able to really spend any time with him. It's strange, when he's here, Quinn has the ability to get on my every last nerve. And yet now that he's not here, I'm going to miss his antics. On the positive side, it will give me one on one time with Catherine. Too bad all she wants to do these days is play Princess stuff all the time. I try and get around this by having the Toy Story alien guys interact with them: "Oh Princess, you have been choosen".

When I got home Catherine was still asleep and Ginger was reupholstering the chairs I hate. Ginger really likes these chairs, but I think they're hideous. They're not overly comfortable and the upholstery they came with was horrible (left side). Well, the upholstery is better now (right side). I still don't like the metal part of the chairs, but they're better now than they used to be. Props to Ginger for doing all this upholstery by herself.

We did get to talk to Quinn on the phone tonight. Catherine made sure she got to talk with him too and told him some of the stuff she had done since he had been gone. When I talked to Quinn he told me about some of what he had done. Unfortunately I couldn't really understand a word he said. Luckily Ginger was on the line also and translated since she had already talked to him and knew what he was saying. You think you know English until you have kids and they start talking, then you realize that as their parents you're probably the only people on planet that has a shot at interpreting exactly what they're saying, and sometimes, not even then. It really is an art.

Lastly, as the sun was setting tonight it resulted in some really interesting shades and patterns. I tried capture it, and even though I got this, it really doesn't do justice to how the sky actually looked. And for the record, these shots have not been altered or adjusted at all except for resizing them.

No Love For The Green Man

This has been a slow building rant. When I first saw this a while back, I complained about it to Ken (who occasionally updates this blog). Ken has the distinct honor (or misfortune depending on how you look at it) of being the sample group for most of my rants. So here we go, the image to the left provided by the U.S. Postal Service shows new 39-cent and 24-cent postage stamps featuring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl and half a dozen other superheros, which was released Thursday, July 20, 2006 (hmmm, mental note: go buy a sheet of stamps). See this article if Yahoo still has it up for more details.

So what's wrong with this collection of heroes. There's no stamp for J'onn J'onzz a.k.a. Martian Manhunter! How can you have all the main DC heroes up there and not include J'onn. He was a founder of the Justice League for Pete's sake. All the other founders are up there on the stamp. There's Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern and even Aquaman. Aquaman gets a stamp for crying out loud and J'onn gets shafted. He was easily the most powerful member in the League also. He has almost all of Superman's powers, like super-human strength, invulnerability, super-speed, flight, and heat vision ("Martian Vision") -- at levels close to those of Superman himself. In addition to those (as if those weren't enough) he's able to shapeshift (adopting human form, elongating his limbs, growing to immense size, and so on), turn invisible, and alter his density (increasing it to become tougher and stronger, decreasing it to become incorporeal and thus able to pass through solid objects such as walls). Then because the dude isn't powerful enough yet, he was also a very powerful telepath, able to coordinate team members across the globe mentally. He's practically a one man Justice League. His one weakness (and admittedly, it's significant) is he fears fire, that's like his kryptonite. Still, the guy was a League founder, and deserves to be on a stamp. I mean, come on, Hawkman gets a stamp? I really don't know how they came up with those choices. Plastic Man I can almost see, but he wasn't even created by DC. DC acquired Plastic Man from Quality Comics after that company went under. And if you're going to include DC owned characters that DC didn't create, then I really don't see why Captain Marvel didn't get a stamp either.

Name That Bird (Updated)

This is the parental unit bird that has its nest in the bush outside our house. Anyone know what type of bird this is? I was thinking a Mockingbird, but I'm not a bird guy so I can't say for sure.

Ok, I got a better picture of it tonight. With the new picture, I'm almost positive this is a Mockingbird, maybe a Northern Mockingbird. It's hard to make out from the picture on Wikipedia, but the feather markings on the wings seem almost identical although the body shape appears to be different.

Bed Upgrades

Catherine has finally graduated from a mattress on the floor in her room to an actual bed. It's her "princess" bed. At least that's what she calls it. Grammy brought the bed up from Richmond today (Nana left today, so we're sort of a revolving hotel this week). And I had this grand and crazy plan that Catherine was going to grow up in an androgynous environment. And I wasn't going to have her play with dolls and she could play with cars and video games if she wanted. And what happens? She ends up just completely loving the Princess stuff. It's infuriating. Like her little brain has been programmed by someone to like that stuff (maybe it's a software bug, I wonder if she has a reboot switch).

Quinn also got some accessories for his bed. He got a new comforter and pillow that has Nascar stuff on it. So he was happy with that. I didn't get to take a lot of pictures today since after I got home I was basically helping put the bed together once the kids got up. Amazingly Quinn was still napping when I got home, I guess him playing with Nana wore him out.

Baby Birds

If you remember we had a rabbit visiting us not too long ago. There was a local bird that was somewhat agitated that the rabbit was around. I was never sure why since I didn't really think birds and rabbits were natural enemies. Turns out the bird has a nest in the bush in front of our house. It appears that there are at least two smaller birds in there that have already hatched. As I was taking the picture I kept looking over my shoulder afraid the parental bird was going to be dive bombing me.

Since my Mom is up, that allowed Ginger and I to have lunch together today sans kids. We went to Tijauna Flats, which is the restaurant I went to last week with Ken and Clara. Ginger found out that they claim not to use nuts or peanut oil (some vegetable oils contain peanuts since peanuts are apparently vegetables) in their cooking, so we may be able to take Catherine there in the future. Always good to have another potential dining place with the kids.

Speaking of the kids, they basically played almost all day with Nana. Whether it was riding bikes or playing some form of sport outside. When I came home I did some gardening work by getting rid of some weeds in the area in front of the house. Catherine actually got out some gardening gloves and helped me pull up weeds. After that I played some with Quinn. The heat was pretty brutal so that even after only playing outside with the kids for a half an hour or so I was coated in sweat. Since I didn't take kid pictures today, I grabbed these from Nana's camera.

Strange News From Comic Con

This past weekend was the San Diego Comic Convention. Arguably one of the bigger comic book conventions of the year. And yes, it has people showing up in costume (some of which really shouldn't be wearing costumes). It doesn't do a lot for the current impression people in this country ascribe to comic book geek culture (that's right, I'm talking about the Simpson's Comic Book Guy image), but it has gotten more mainstream. These days the convention is big news. It got coverage on NPR. It has Hollywood types showing up looking for something they can translate to the big screen. Comics are big business these days.

Now there was a lot of strange news coming out of the convention this year. Richard Donner (the director of Superman I and II) writing Superman. Nicolas Cage writing a comic book. In fact, there are a lot of Hollywood types putting out comics. Rumor has it that since comics are so frequently adapted to movies, this could be a way to get a project you want to do a film about prepped and green lighted by showcasing it in comic book form first. It's not uncommon for actors (like Seth Green's Freshmen and Rosari Dawson's Occult Crimes Taskforce) to take this route by showing their project in comic book form in hopes building a fan base and then getting it made into a movie where they would then either star or direct.

But even so, every now and then you hear news of some new comic and wonder "How is that going to work?". Well, remember that company that's going to produce "My Name Is Earl" as a comic book? They now have another title in the works. One that you may have heard of, but never really thought it was real. The tag line they introduced this new book with was "A great comic book, or the greatest comic book?" Now that question may seem familiar to those people that watch the Colbert Report (all three of you), and so it should. It turns out that Oni is going to be publishing a comic book version of Colbert's (what I thought was a fictional book) "Stephen Colbert's Alpha Squad 7: Lady Nocturne: A Tek Jansen Adventure". Yep, that's right, they're going to do a comic book about a fictional book portraying an over the top futuristic action hero who looks like Stephen Colbert.

New Fish

Today we went to the fish store and bought some fish for Quinn's 10 gallon aquarium that he got for his birthday. Both kids were really excited about getting the fish. After steering both kids away from the more aggressive fish (they both gravitated to the more aggressive cichlids), we were able to steer them back to the more passive tanks. Quinn picked out a couple sailfin mollies while Catherine picked out a couple of red and blue dwarf gourami. Oh yeah, and we grabbed a clown pleco while were there. I don't think the tank has much algae growing yet, but eventually it might. And rather than buying a sunken ship or castle, the kids pick out some large rocks for the bottom (a couple different pieces of quartz I believe). Yep, that's right, we paid for rocks. The only reason my head didn't completely explode was Nana was up and she's the one that bought everything since this was her gift to Quinn.

Pool Day

Didn't have much on the agenda today except for going to the pool. But that one thing filled up most of the day. We ended up being at the pool for almost three hours. That meant we had to deal with two adult swims (the fifteen minute periods where the kids aren't allowed in the big pool).

I'm not sure whose idea sitting in the tube was, I think it was Ginger's idea. Catherine did it first, which meant that Quinn had to have a turn as soon as she was done. Not to long after I took those pictures though, the game became whoever wasn't in the tube would try and tip over whoever was in it.

Since I had the camera I tried getting some non kid shots. I still haven't decided whether I like these in color or B&W, but for now I'm leaning towards the B&W versions.

Once we got home and cleaned up, we all took a nap. I took one too, which turned into an extended nap as I didn't wake up till almost eight. I was pretty tired since I stayed up till all hours of the night last night and then got up early this morning with Quinn. Now the kids are going to the pool almost regularly the chlorine is wreaking havoc on Catherine's hair. Between the chlorine and the Catherine napping while her hair is wet, she ends up looking like she stuck her finger in a light socket by the time I get home to see her. Makes taking good pictures challenging to say the least.

Fluffy's Back

Our friend the rabbit returned tonight. This time when I took his picture, I set my camera's ISO speed to 1600 just to make sure I didn't get a blurry picture. This just means it's more grainy than blurry. The rabbit is getting a lot braver. The kids were able to come outside and sit on the steps and the rabbit didn't seem to care overly much tonight (normally it high tails it whenever it would see people close moving about). While they were out there I got a picture of the kids in a rare display of affection for each other. I personally like the mischievous look that's in Catherine's eyes. Although I have no idea what she was planning, there's obviously something going on in that head.

Movie Reviews

I finished watching the last DVD of 24 Season 2 tonight. What a crappy way to end it. Guess I now have to start in on Season 3. It's pretty good for being a TV show. But there are a few things I've noticed about it. The daughter storyline is basically useless. Anyone that helps Jack seems to have a life expectancy of like 4-6 hours. And somehow really important events only happen on the hour. That said, I'll still start watching Season 3 at some point I'm sure. Overall I thought the first 18 hours were really intense. The next 3 were still good, but not quite as good. And the last couple of hours it felt like everything went off the tracks. Probably would have liked it better had they not done a cliffhanger type ending to the season. The biggest problem I have with the show is since everything occurs in 1 day, this Bauer guy must have a healing factor like Wolverine. Through the course of the 'day' he gets a huge self inflicted gash in his head, he's in multiple car crashes, he's in a plane crash (that's right, a plane crash), a long piece of shrapnel is embedded in his leg (which he subsequently just pulls out), and then the really bad stuff started happening to him. Yet through it all by the next hour the injury from the previous hour doesn't seem to bother him anymore. He must have a healing factor to the extreme.

Since I'm on the subject, guess I can float in reviews of some of the other movies I've seen recently. We watched Shopgirl not too long ago. It's different. It's based on a novella by Steve Martin (who also did the screenplay, and starred in the movie). I wanted to like it. And I don't regret watching it. But I didn't really like the movie.

While I was on vacation I got a chance to watch The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The short version of the review is "ZZZzzzzzzz". I can elaborate a big for the longer version. I remember reading the book as young lad. And this seemed really faithful to the book as I recall. I remember when it first came out everyone was comparing the movie to "Lord of the Rings". I didn't see it. Sure, both have characters on a journey who are given strange mystical gifts (by Santa in one, Elves in the other, which is a connection I hadn't really thought about before). It felt almost tedious at times though. And I never really felt like the characters were in any danger, even during the fight scenes. Possibly because I had read the book and knew how it was going to end, but it could just be that there's just too much in the movie that occurs out of the blue just to advance along the plot. And the whole religious symbolism feels forced. I mean really forced. To the point of it makes the rest of the events that occur seem useless. I'll bet it was that way in the book too, but back when I read it I would read just about anything and the quality and merit of the work didn't matter that much (heck, I remember back then thinking Runaway Ralph was great when I read that).

More recently I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Basically I watched this after seeing how much money the second on made on it's opening weekend. I figure there must be something to this. And there is. Haven't seen the second on yet, but the first one was a lot of fun. An adventure flick that doesn't take itself too seriously. The Jack Sparrow character was just flat out fun to watch. Although try as I might I never really bought into Orlando Bloom's character, I just kept seeing Legolas and was waiting for him to pull out his bow and arrow.

Finally, I've been watching the new Blade series on Spike. The guy playing Blade (Sticky Fingaz) doesn't quite pull it off as well as Wesley Snipes, but does a respectable job of walking around being terse and acting tough. The joy of this series is actually in the writing. Believe it or not, there's actually an underlying story, and it's not too bad. And I'll just say that Jill Wagner doesn't hurt the show (Yowsa).

Will That Work As A Comic Book?

I really like the show "My Name Is Earl". I think it's very well written and it doesn't hurt that it's funny as all get out sometimes too. More than likely it just appeals to my type of humor. Anyway, apparently there's going to be a comic book version of the show. Maybe it's just me, but this doesn't seem like the type of show that would translate well into a comic book.

And since we're talking about humor at the level of the "My Name Is Earl" show. Tonight I will provide you with yet another example of what not to do. This isn't to be confused with the patented "JamesF's Guide To Relationships: Lowered Expectations" (look for it in a bookshop near you soon, and if they don't have it, well, "Demand It!"). If, hypothetically of course, you go out with KennyG (a.k.a. "King") and Clara to a Mexican restaurant for lunch, since we're talking hypothetically here, we'll say some place like Tijuana Flats, then later in the evening you may want to forgo playing hide and seek with your kids where you end up hiding in small cramped spaces for long periods of time. Just some friendly advice from me to you.

It's Who You Know

As reader may remember, I ran a little run in with the law not too long ago. I was ticked for a while, then I got over it. Then I proceeded to completely forget about it. And that includes taking care of the ticket and paying it. So imagine my surprise when last week as we're driving down to NC on our vacation, Ginger mentions that the court date is coming up soon. We both say we should remember to take care of that as soon as we get down there. Once we're there I promptly forgot about it again, but remembered on Monday while I was at the beach. And then forgot again by the time we returned to the house. But luckily I remembered on Tuesday night after the kids had gone to bed. So I start clicking around on the web trying to find how to look up my ticket and pay for it. I finally find it online, but the court date is scheduled for 9:30 AM Wednesday. No problem, I'll pay online and be done with it. Here's the kicker, online payments need to be made at least two days prior to the court date in order for it to be processed in time.

So now I'm really in a bit of a pickle. As I was talking it over with Ginger, it was sounding like the only option I had was going to be driving the 5 and a half hours back to attend the court date or simply skip the court date and maybe take a trip to the big house (or get my license suspended or something). But before I committed to driving back, I figured on a long shot I would get a bit of legal advice. So I called Frank (he's my Uncle who happens to be a lawyer). And after quizzing me for a couple of minutes he jots down the case number and tells me not to worry about it, that he'll take care of it and get the case continued. Woooo. Let me just give the man props. He managed to get the case continued after I told him about it even though the court time was 9:30 AM the next morning. That pretty much single handedly saved my vacation. I was sure at one point I was going to have to be driving for 11 hours on Wednesday, which would have put a definite crimp in my week.

Back To The Grind

Had to go back to work today. I know this sounds crazy, but several years ago, if I didn't go to work for a while, I would be excited about going back. I really liked what I was doing. I'm not sure when that changed, but I was more or less dreading heading back in today. I really wouldn't have minded my vacation going on for another couple of weeks. Ginger didn't seem to have that problem though and got right back into the swing of things and took the kids to the library to return books and check out some new ones.

Meanwhile I eventually made it through the day, and when I did come home Ginger and the kids were at the pool. So I went and joined them for a half an hour or so. The water wasn't even remotely cold. I suppose that had something to do with the temperature almost getting to triple digits here today. Once the boards were open I hung out in the deep end while Quinn and Catherine took turns jumping off the diving boards. We did that right up until it was time for adult swim, at which point we headed home for dinner.

Recovering

Today was pretty much a do nothing day. I think all we accomplished was going out to eat lunch and buying some minimal groceries at the store. Other than that everyone was still recovering from the long week and catching up on some much needed rest. Besides, it's not like we could do much in the heat outside anyway. It was registering 113 in the sun today. It still wasn't as bad as yesterday in NC where it was humid and hot. You got drenched in sweat as soon as you stepped outside. I hear today was suppose to be a record breaking temperature day, which beats the record set on this day last year. It's sure it's just a coincidence that all the hottest temperatures are in the last couple years.

We tried to have steaks on the grill tonight, but the tank ran out of propane. The last time I used the grill was when we had everyone up for the mini Tech reunion, so it's good that it didn't run out during that.

So last night as I was driving back and everyone else in the car was asleep I had the opportunity to do some thinking. And it was about pop culture references. If Quinn or Catherine lose at a game, and I say "Here, have a lifesaver", they'll have no clue what that means (other than wonder why I'm offering them a flotation device). I'm wondering how many of those type commercial taglines have already vanished from today's general knowledge.

"Ancient Chinese secret, huh?"
"You're soaking in it"
"It's not nice to fool Mother Nature"
"They work hard, so you don't have to"
"Plop plop. Fizz Fizz"
"How many licks does it take to get the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop?"
"It's the quicker picker upper" (people probably think this is a drug these days)
"Where's the Beef?"
"Trust me!"
"Yes I am!"

I'm sure there are others that I'm not remembering. Strangely some TV show taglines of the same timeframe have become iconic in a way. Such as "Dyn-o-mite", "What you talkin' about Willis?" and "Shuzam".

Beach Fun Day 6: The Final Chapter

Today we started a bit later than yesterday, but we still spent a good while at the beach. Quinn 'fished' again. Although once we were there we discovered the new bobber we had bought had broke. This was probably from him and the other kids fishing in the house. For some reason I didn't bring all the new ones to the beach with me, so I had to bike back home and get the bobbers. Then once Quinn got bored with fishing, he wanted to play baseball, which I had also forgotten and left at the house, so I biked back again (trying to get my exercise in today obviously). Catherine did her normal routine of digging and playing at the very edge of the waves. Today also marked the only day I seriously went into the water. I eventually took Quinn out there with me to let him 'ride the waves' as they came.

After that we all came home and washed off all the sand and played in the pool. Catherine was doing really well at swimming today. I'm really impressed with how competent she is. She's like a little fish. And Quinn is doing better at being able to tread water. I still have a hard time calling it treading water since it's more like flailing around for 12 seconds before he eventually sinks. But still, he's able to sustain himself for a while, which makes me feel that much more secure about him being in the water and not needing to have me be near him every second.

After lunch we spent a lot of time getting all of our stuff ready to leave. Then we drove up to the Currituck lighthouse up in Corolla. I was able to get some pretty decent pictures I think. Mind you, nothing spectacular, but the sun was setting so the light was nice and warm.

Finally after we returned to the beach house and finished packing, I snuck out to try and get a sunset shot. No luck though, the cloud cover to the north and west prevented me from getting anything. Once we finally left, the kids fell asleep not too long after we dropped off the house keys. The ride back was long, especially since we had to stop in Richmond and pick up Ginger's keys (funny story there). We finally got home around 2 AM after an exhausting day. And I can only question why am I still up writing this?
